Will a Sigma 70-300 DL lens work on my Nikon D40?

I was just wondering if a Sigma 70-300 DL macro zoom lens will work on my nikon d40 with the AF or not.
i have got offered one
i wasn't to sure if it would work i have tried goggling but not found much information.

If it's in Nikon mount, it will fit, but it may not autofocus - Sigma call their lenses with built-in motors HSM, and your D40 needs a lens motor to autofocus.

The Sigma lenses that are compatible are in the link. They're mostly DC and DG lenses not DL lenses so yours will have no AF.

Also the lens isn't a true macro since it only magnifies to half size not 1:1

It will work only if the lens has a Nikon mount. Sigma makes lenses for different cameras and the mounts aren't the same with each brand. Just make sure each lens you buy has a Nikon mount.

Then there's the issue of autofocus. Your camera does not have an autofocus motor. If you can't live without it, make sure you buy lenses with a built-in autofocus motor.

With older Nikon-mount lenses that are fully manual, you may be forced to use it only in manual mode with your camera. Oftentimes even the lightmeter won't be there to help you.

With Sigma lenses, the only lenses which will autofocus on your D40 are those with the HSM or Hyper-Sonic Motor. Sigma lenses with OS are also preferable because OS or Optical Stabilisation is their equivalent of Nikon's VR.

The D40 can work with manual focus lenses and I believe it can even give a focus confirmation green dot, (my D60 certainly used to), but it is not an easy or fast way to work and it is totally hopeless for wildlife photography.

If you are looking for a cheap telephoto, look for a good second hand Nikon 55-200mm VR. There are quite a few around at reasonable prices and it's a decent lens.
