What tripod is best for a Nikon D3100?

Which one is best for this camera, as it is quite heavy. Thanks.

Also links to buy it on amazon would be helpful too.

The one that's best will depend on what you're going to use it for, what lens(es) you have and how portable you need it to be (will it go out on hikes with you?). And how much money you've got.

That camera isn't especially heavy, to be honest, though it may feel so after a compact. It would be better to get a tripod that's rigid so you don't suffer minor vibrations. Twist grip tubular legs seem to be a bit thicker than the channel section ones with clamps to lock them, and don't feel as flimsy.

From experience the 3 axis adjustable heads on cheaper tripods eventually suffer from wear and don't tighten properly so the head becomes floppy. A fluid head may be more reliable. You can swap heads though.

Specialist camera shops may have a wider selection than Amazon. I buy things from Calumet and their own-brand products can be cheaper than the main suppliers but are decent quality, see the link. If you're in a larger city, check the website for any that may be local to you, you can go in and see them for yourself.

Looking at the bigger picture, the D3100 is probably one of lightest serious cameras out there. Any of the mid range tripods from the big makers (that is Giottos, Gitzo, Manfrotto, Slik) should take your camera without trouble.

I have had good experience with the Manfrotto 190 range in both the XPro and DXB forms, and it should be sufficient for your needs. Though remember that it never hurts to invest in a top quality tripod, as your camera will only get heavier.

What do you want it for? Landscape? Macro?
What sort of money are you talking about?

Personally I like Giotto's tripods. Well made and robust.

This one came out best from that review:

As well as Amazon, check out Warehouse EXpress (WEX). Tripods don't get such deep discounts as they are not sold in such large numbers. The pwople at WEX are very helpful if you speak to them.
