Thoughts on the Nikon D40? Rating out of 10?

As a starter camera I've fallen in love with the Nikon D40 and I'm ready to go out and buy it - but I want some opinions first.
Is it a good starter camera? Cons and pros? Person opinions? Etc…

Anything helps! Just curious!

It is very outdated.

Out dated… As written above… What does that really mean? Well certainly there's newer models of cameras and clearly the new models have more technical stuff and probably better sensors but any dslr is a good camera regardless… Especially from either Canon or Nikon.

For an old camera, it is one of the classics.

Since it has a CCD, it is capable of syncing with flash at much higher shutter speeds than newer CMOS sensored cameras.

Nikon has made some other classic cameras like the Nikon D90, D7000 and D3s

I have two colleagues who still use their D40 when shooting action in bright sun where the need to use flash fill at high shutter speeds -- like when shooting X-Games

It is an excellent low cost camera you can use to learn the fundamentals of photography.

Rating any camera 'out of 10' is too simplistic. A friend of mine, with no technical knowledge of photography, gets lovely results from her D40, which she has had since 2009. The D40 is now a discontinued model (discon about 2009), but if you can get one in good condition second-hand at a low price then it might be the camera for you. Otherwise look at its latest replacement, sorry, I can't remember model name, but it would be the most basic Nikon DSLR.
