Suggestions for a DSLR for detective work?

I'm a detective and am looking to buy a better camera than my department has. I need to stay under $1000 (Hey, I'm a cop.) I'm looking at the Nikon D5100 because I like the swivel screen (often have some really odd angles) and at its cost I can afford a macro lens and speed light. Any suggestions would be great. I'd love the D7000 but that is just too far out of budget. I already own a Canon XT. Just looking to upgrade.

I suggest you buy a bridge cam. Because the latest have all capabilities of dslr plus a huuge zoom range.Nikon latest the P510 has 42x optical zoom. That is over kilometer of zoom range.1000mm equivalent.ofcourse they don't have huge sensors like dslrs but for detective work they are perfect. Just check its zoom tests on utube you will be amazed. And the best benefit is its much cheaper than dslrs
