Rubber lens hood that works with Nikon's 85mm f1.8D?

I'm heavily considering adding an 85mm to my camera bag.

I do not like the fact that the lens's default lens hood (HN-23) is a metal screw on because I would not have all the time to do all that screwing on and off every time I take it out of my bag. I wonder why it's not rubber like the hood for the 50mm f1.8D.

I know that the lens uses a 62mm filter thread and that companies like Promaster make rubber lenses. I was wondering if I could use almost any 62mm rubber lens hood that won't vignette.

Any advice would be helpful.

By the way, the bodies I use are a Nikon D300s and a Nikon D300. Both are DX sensors.

Screw-on lens hoods are not a big deal. Two of my older Nikkor lenses have them and I just leave them attached at all times.

If you do buy a third party lens hood, make sure it is designed specifically for the focal length of the lens. The wrong one will either cause vignetting or be ineffective as a lens hood.

Any screw on rubber hood that matches the threads will work fine. You are not going to have any vignette problems with an 85mm lens. You only get into possible vignette issues when the lens gets to the wide angle focal lengths such as under 50mm.

A rubber hood can be great with a polarizer filter. Screw the filter on the lens, then screw the hood into the filter. You can then easily turn the hood to adjust the filter, … Very handy!
