Picking a lens for my DSLR?

I'm taking Digital Photography 101 next semester and need a DSLR camera. I know little about them and don't need nothing fancy.
I'm going with Nikon D3200 or Nikon D5100.
My question is, what kind of lens should i get? Should i just get the stock 18-55mm Lens that comes with both cameras?
I want to be able to do the blur background effect or get a sharp image of my subject BUT don't want to spend too much on lens and stuff.

That and/or a 50mm f1.8 which will give a very narrow depth of field and the blurred background.
For a blurred background you need a large aperture regardless of the lens.
Tbh if you're just beginning photography I wouldn't go too overboard on wanting particular effects before you understand what's going on.

The 18-55mm is a good all-around lens especially for learning photography. The lens is cheapest if bought in a kit with the camera. You can blur the background with it if you know exactly what you are doing.
