I'm moving to LA next monday and i decided i wanted to make a self documentary about me moving from a fairly country place(kansas) to a big city and adapting to the changes in scenery and peopl and restarting my social life but i'm not sure how to start. I'm basically doing this with no money all i have is a Nikon D3100 and a laptop for editing

Think about the story you want to tell. Do you want to focus on how your social life will change, on what you've left behind, on what you're looking forward to, or even how the environment of the big city is different? Don't worry about the equipment you have to film, just get out there and get going. If you manage to follow some basic filming rules, your work will just get that much better. The important thing is, what is the story you want to tell? For tips from the digital side, check out Indy Mogul (http://www.youtube.com/user/indymogul), especially their videos on how to make amateur video look good, and basic filming rules. I'll stick a couple links in the sources, in case you want to take a look. Especially look at these videos ( and which talk about how to make a documentary. Remember, it's not the gear you have, it's what you do with it. And above all, have fun!
