Macro lens for Nikon 3200?

So I'm looking for a nice macro lens for my nikon d3200. And I'm just wondering if its worth it to save up for a nice $400 or more lens(from the Nikon website) or if this one is okay?

And also, is buying filter just not worth it either? How close up and how is the quality of the picture itself? I know they're not that expensive at all, and you get what you pay for!

That's a nice lens - but it will give you quite a close working distance, which if you are planning to shoot macros of insects, could spook them & scare them away before you get the shot.

If you want a longer working distance, then I recommend the Sigma 105mm f2.8 macro. I use a Sigma 50mm f2.8 macro & that is also an excellent lens.

Don't bother with macro 'filters' - rubbish & a waste of money.

The 40 mm Nikkor macro lens, when used on your camera should work just fine.

For decades my working macro lens on my 35 mm camera was a 55 mm and it gave me plenty of working distance from the camera to the subject (0.9 ft. (0.25m at 1:1 image to subject ratio) The 40 mm macro on your camera gives you a working distance of 0.53 ft. (0.163m) at a 1:1 macro ratio. Still plenty of working space unless you are photographing dangerous or poisonous animals

My wife, at the time, was a field botanist and used the same 55 mm macro to shoot not only closeups of the vegetation she needed o document, but the insects usually associated with each plant.

Leaning how to stalk insects will save you a lot of money, money you can spend on other things like more memory cards, a copy of Adobe Lightroom 5 and other accessories you may find helpful as a novice photographer

Too short, the 40micro is a great lense, but it can't be your first/only macro lens… Unless you are a stamps/coins collector ;-)

if you want to try something very affordable, less than 100$, take a look to extension tubes ( and some old 50-35-28mm prime lens )
