I see it has a live view mode which is different than in d3000 model. Does this live view only work when recording a video or can you also use it to see what you are going to take a picture of?

thanks. I'm trying to buy an intro dslr and want a nikon. But if there's an equivalent model from a different brand that is similar in price and functionality, then i won't be opposed to hearing about it.

Live view is good when shooting video, but for shooting still images, using the viewfinder is much more practical.

Trying to shoot still images using live view is the most certain way to add blur to your photos as the camera waves around as you hold it at arm's length as you attempt to compose your shot.

These dSLR cameras are NOT P&S cameras and you need to learn how to use them in the traditional way.

Actually the D3000, and D3100 have been replaced by the D3200 and it has the best sensor of the three.

If you don't want to take the time to learn how to balance ISO, shutter speed and lens aperture, then buy yourself a P&S and enjoy the bliss of not having to think before you press the shutter release, letting the camera do all the thinking for you

Yes, you can use it to frame your still photograph. One way to really find out about a camera is to read its manual. Download the D3100 manual from Nikon.
