"Must have"? Well I guess that term depends on you. No camera is a must have for any reason other than perhaps a professional who would use it to make a living.

Are you getting it for photos or video? If photos it i superior over other DSLRs but if video. I'd suggest you leave the DSLR area and get a BlackMagic Cinema Camera. It's like 2k cheaper and has proven to be better then DSLR cameras in Video

There are other full-frame cameras, and the Sony A99 does better video at a lower price.

Cropped-sensor DSLRs are perfectly adequate, especially if you're starting out.

I guess you have not taken the time to visit the Nikon website.

The D4, D600 and D800 are all full frame cameras. Which you buy will have more to do with your needs as a photographer and your budget.

My "must have" Nikon is the Nikon D3s (no longer made) when shooting sports is due to its amazing performance in low light.

My "must have" studio camera is the Nikon D800 or D800E

A D4 is only a must have for professional news and sports photographers, and as previously mentioned many prefer the older D3S… Mainly because of the lower pixel count of the sensor for better low light performance and dual CF slots.

Rich armatures get them for bragging rights and because they think they will get better pictures… Until an artist with an iPhone gets better accolades.

Personally, I'd get the D600 if I was looking for an amateur full frame camera.
