Hi… I wanted to ask some infos on how to use sb 600 for nikon d3100. What is the distance that must be kept between the speedlight and the subject that is being photographed? Also what is the right position so the speedlight can bounve on the celiing and then on subject.

If you use the speedlight in the iTTL mode, it will calculate the correct exposure for each situation, so you don't have to mess around with distances. Or if you use the speedlight in manual mode (not necessarily putting the camera into manual mode), there's a certain amount of trial-and-error to get the exposure correct.

Also, when you bounce the speedlight, just angle it for the best results. Again, in iTTL mode, the speedlight will calculate the correct power to use to illuminate the subject. 45 deg or 90 deg is a good starting point.

Finally, most Nikon DSLRs have a flash exposure compensation, which allows you to keep the speedlight in iTTL mode and adjust the exposure +/1 a stop or two if it is not just right.
