How to use Nikon D3000 shutter speed?

Lauren
Lauren

I have a Nikon D3000 and I want to make the shutter speed last about 5 seconds. I'm not a photographer and only bought the camera for higher quality photos so I know nothing about the settings. If someone could give me a step-by-step. I put the dial on ''S'' but no option comes up for my to change any settings.

This is the type of photo I'm trying to re-create image

Thank you.

Added (1). I'm recreating the photo by waving glow sticks in the dark… If that helps at all.

Added (2). I do NOT have a users manual. The camera is second hand.

Have you tried picking up and reading your Owners Manual? The Owners Manual comes with the camera for a reason which covers so much basic information including on how to change the shutter speed 5 seconds and greater.

Try looking at pages 69 and 72 of the Owners Manual

Since you don't have the Owners Manual. It's not that difficult to Goggle the information for the Owners Manual which all you had needed to do was to type in "Nikon D3000 Owners Manual" then click on the link that goes with the Nikon D3000 Owners Manual.

By The Way DEAD had done the work for you by providing the pages and link for the Owners Manual on the Nikon D3000

Download the instructions from the Nikon website and read them.

For the shot you want do this

* mount the camera on a tripod
* pre-focus the lens manually where you will be waving the light stick around
* using a remote shutter release, lock the shutter open (in the bulb setting).
* make your light graffiti test. Close the shutter
* look at the cameras LCD to see if the exposure is correct and if not, open or close the lens aperture for the best colour saturation.
* repeat the process until you have what you want

How you are going to get the multi-colour light will depend upon the lights you use

NOTE:

DEAD did give you the link you need to download the user manual. I'm surprised you did not loo on the Nikon website yourself for the user manual

Your manual will tell you how to change speeds - you're looking for, 'B,' or, 'Bulb,' (different names for the same thing).

You can download a free pdf manual from Nikon.

Set to S then turn dial to the left until you see 5" for 5 seconds in the viewfinder. Download a manual from Nikon's website. If you want longer, use Bulb in M mode.
