How to upload pictures from camera to computer?

I just recently have gotten the new Nikon D3100 camera for Christmas. I wish to upload my pictures from my camera to my computer but it won't let me. I would usually just put my SD card into my computer but when I do it says error. I even tried a connection cord but it won't pick. Yes, I even updated all my software but to no avail.

Do what everyone else does.

Remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into a card reader.

Then using your computer skills, copy all the images on the card to your computer, to a new file folder named for the subject and date. This way you can later find them when you need them
