How to set up my remote and Nikon d3100?

I just purchased this Vivitar remote for my Nikon d3100.

I got it today in the mail, but I'm a little confused on how to sync it to my camera. I plugged it in and turned it on, but it won't take the picture. Any ideas?

Go to the link and read some of the reviews, they'll give you some ideas. This seems like one of those things you love or hate, although being from Vivitar it's amazing that some of them actually work.

If the remote works by infrared signal, then it won't work because the 3100 lacks the infrared port or "eye" needed to capture the signal. The 3100 is the only entry level Nikon DSLR that lacks the eye, before and after have them, have no idea why Nikon didn't put it on there.
