How long will a d3200 record video for on a single charge? - 1

Added (1). I'm looking to get a Nikon d3200 and was wondering, how long of a recording session can I get out of a single charge on a battery?

Added (2). ok… How long (hours/minutes) will i get while recording video… I know many use dslr's for making movie and am wondering how many hours/minutes i would get out of a battery if I was recording and using the screen. Full hd…

Like all digital SLR cameras with a video feature, the amount of takes (total shooting time) will depend upon how much you use the LCD (live view) on the camera.

If you do all your composing and camera setup using the viewfinder, the battery will not be used. It is when you go to live view (whether you are actually shooting video or just composing) that the battery starts to deplete.

When using the camera as a still camera, it can take up to 540 still images, far more that you would shoot in a single day. By using the live view feature (as you would when using a P&S camera) when shooting stills, that number can be cut in half

If you are planning a whole day of shooting video, you need to do what videographers do when they use proper video cameras. Carry spare batteries or if shooting on a set, use an AC adapter and power the camera directly from the mains

Depends on the sate of the battery in general (old, young, well treated, badly treated, etc), and the conditions of shooting. If you are thinking of long sessions you should buy a spare battery - maybe after you have had some experience in your typical shooting conditions.

If you are looking for a serious camera for shooting video, buy a good camcorder. Any DSLR is basically a camera designed for stills photos, with video as an add-on.

Depends on how you use the camera. Capturing a single 10 second clip is different from pressing record and waiting for it to overheat and shut down or get the file continuously to a 4 gig file or 20 minutes long then shout down automatically. Using auto focus/aperture uses more battery. Using the LCD panel uses more battery. It is all in the manual

Recording movies starts on page 49. The file duration limitation, overheating and file segmentation items are known issues. The folks I know who use low-end dSLRs for video typically have 2-3 of the same camera - while one is cooling down, the another is used.

Good luck using a dSLR designed for still image capture to get video that is a convenience feature. It will work - and the video will be fine - assuming you understand the limitations - and that it is not a camcorder and can't be treated like one.

But to answer you question, your "single recording session" will be limited to the 4 gig single file. You can press the record button again… Do that enough times and the next limit will be when it overheats and shuts down. What you can't do is press record and when the battery is nearly dead, press record again to stop video capture. But you can do that with a camcorder…

Around 15 minutes or so in one take. You can have multiple takes but as to how many exactly will depend on a lot of factors. If you want longer continuous shooting ability, get a cheap camcorder like the Sony Handycam.

Regardless of how long the battery will last, you will be limited to 4GB clips - as with all DSLRs and stills cameras. Depending on the video format/resolution, that could be anything from 12 to 20 minutes of continuous shooting, and no longer.

If you want to record video continuously for longer, you will need a camcorder, not a stills camera.

To find out how long the battery will last leave your camera switched on, and find out yourself.
