I just got a DSLR camera Nikon D3100 and would like to know how people get their signature (watermark on their photos). Please any advice will help.

It's done in photoshop.basically you have your picture, that's the background layer, then you have you signature watermark, this can be something you make in paint, stacked on top using a second layer. The watermark will be the stronger picture until you lower the opacity slider for that layer, this makes the watermark image "ghost" onto the background image and there you go.

I'm sure there are plenty of "free" programs that can do this simple task for you, just look around the web, GIMP works a lot like photoshop and is free.

Check manual for time stamp options,

for your own designed watermark, you can use photo editor.
design logo and/ or name tag, then save that file for use,
to apply that image.open photo, then import that watermark in new layer,
then use layer modes and opacity to adjust transparency %
you can create a slight bump-map of simple logo, and use that as watermark pattern

you can try action scripts if you have photoshop, or create new,

It is done in post processing with an image editor such as Adobe Photoshop.
basically a text layer with the opacity changed to suit.
