FX lens on a DX camera?
I wanted to know if a Fx lens like Nikkor 50mm Af-S f1.8G would work on my Nikon d3100 which is a DX camera?
What about other fx lenses on my d3100?
There's absolutely no problem. An FX lens is designed for the larger 35mm sized FX sensor. It's when you use a DX lens on an FX camera that you get compromises. Just be sure your lenses are AF-S versions for perfect autofocus compatibility.
For your own reference, here's a list of compatible lenses for your D3100.

Of course it will. Any FX or DX lens will work on any DX or FX camera
The confusion may be because NO Canon EF-S lens (their version of the DX lens) can be used on a full frame Canon camera (their version of a FX camera)
This is NOT true of Nikon cameras and lenses.
While your entry level Nikon D3100 only auto-focuses using AF-S lenses, it can use older AF lenses in the manual mode and you can use the electronic rangefinder to focus the lens, something photographers have been doing for decades without any ill affects.
