Can you be more specific? Nikon has what… 25 of them? Add in all the aftermarket lens makers, and you have probably 75 choices.

So, what is it that you need a telephoto for, and most importantly, how much are you willing to spend to get it?

The Nikon 55-200 VR is a good lens.

Any Nikon telephoto lens will fit on your camera, but only the AF-S lenses will autofocus. All the third party lenses have a Nikon mount, so they will fit; most will have their own autofocus motors, but check. The primary third party lens companies are Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina.

Take the 55-200 if you have enough money, it costs around $170 AUD. Autofocus, internal focusing, low dispersion glass and vibration reduction. If you're going cheap, take the much cheaper 70-300 AF. No autofocus on the D3000 though.
