Best lens for night photography?

I have never tried night photography before I'm using a nikon D7000 with the very first sigma 70-200mm lens and want to capture something like this
But was wondering what the right lens would be to capture something like this

You need a tripod, remote shutter release and just use your cameras light meter. The exposure in your sample was a long one. Note the flag moving enough to be blurred

There's no 'right lens' for night photography.

A photojournalist friend of mine did a 4-hour time lapse photograph of the Taj Mahal (Ron Tarver, in case you want to look up some of his work). When he finished, there were no people in the image. It was done by putting a pin-hole in the lens cap and just tripod mounting the camera and waiting. Fortunately, using black and white film avoids the typical color shift associated with color films when exposing for so long.

You do need a good, solid tripod though… Not some cheap Slik (video).

If you look closely you'll see that the sky is not black on the picture from your link, this only mean one thing, it was taken no more than 30 minutes after the Sunset, just before the sky completely turn black.

The person probably used an incandescent or fluorescent white balance to get more colors out of the sky.

All you need for this type of shot:

-Location.
-Shoot before the sky turn black.
-Tripod.
-Lock the mirror to prevent camera shake.
-Use the self timer to prevent camera shake.
-Any lens will do, try different focal range, the more you zoom the more compressed it will look.
-Proper white balance.
-Use a small aperture like f/11 - f/16 so the light look like small star.
