External flash with phone?

Will an external flash, such as one used for photography with DSLRs, work the same as my phone flash?
Can I use my phone flash and have the same results as an external flash you buy off nikon or canon?

No, not in the way that flashes are attached to a camera. Your phone does not have a hot shoe to attach a flash. However, there are off-camera flashes that will trigger remotely by the flash on your phone. Do a Google search for "off-camera flash for phone" and you'll get lots of info. Google search is a wonderful thing.

No because smartphones do not have flashes. Instead of a flash, they use an LED which is just a fraction as bright as a real flash.
What you can do is get LED flashes for your phone. Instead of using just one LED, these little guys often use 9-12 LEDs providing a much brighter output.

No, for a couple reasons:
1. Flash doesn't communicate with the phone (can't use TTL).
2. Phone doesn't have manual exposure control (suitable for manual control of flash).

They do work the same. The difference is power.

No, for two main reasons:
1: The phone uses an LED (in some cases a xenon flash), which is a fraction of what a proper external flash can do.
2: The phone can't communicate with the flash, thus you will have to manually press the buttons at the same time, which would be incredibly impractical and useless.

Yes, but it requires triggering the external flash with a detector so that it goes off at the same instant as the camera flash. One popular trigger is the "peanut" which attaches to a flash unit PC cable. I have done this with all my cameras that have internal flash units and works well.
