Will the nikon d5100 and 50mm prime work together?

I'm getting this camera: nikon d5100

Yes, but it will be equivalent to 75mm, because the D5100, much like many under £1000 cameras, is crop-sensored so it will NOT be the same as 50mm like it would be on its full-frame older brothers. Your best bet is to go with a 35mm prime because it would then be the same as, or really close to, 50mm. My D3200 and 35mm f/1.8 combination work like a dream.
