What camera should I upgrade to? - 1

I currently have the Nikon D60, but want to upgrade. I want to keep a reasonable price range, as I'm a amateur-beginner photographer. Preferably a camera with video, but if not that's alright. I prefer Nikon, but I wouldn't mind a Canon.

Asking for upgrade options without stating what your current camera isn't doing for you makes any suggestion just a shot in the dark. So what do you want to do that the D60 isn't allowing you to do? How is it hindering your photography?
As has been noted if you're looking to upgrade just because you want better image quality, then look at getting better glass instead. A great lens will always be a great lens, bodies get out dated every few years.

A d60 can take fine pictures under certain conditions. If you want to upgrade i highly recommend the pentax K50, i've seen a deal posted for them on pentaxforums for $489. Its an excellent camera loaded with features. Personally id get a fuji X-E1, i've seen them 2nd hand around $250 and they are pretty awesome. If you want to stay in the Nikon camp i'm sure a D7000 is quite affordable now as well.

If you want to upgrade, then that is what you want to do. So, let's look at the entry level cameras that are available today. The least expensive DSLR's are the Sony Alpha SLT-A58 - $450, Canon T3 - $460, Nikon D3100 - $480, and Pentax K-500 - $400. Take your pick.

If you have more than 1 lens for your D60 in my opinion the D7100 body only would be a substantial upgrade over your 6 year. Old camera.

However, if all you have is the zoom that came with it when you bought it then your options are more open. The previously mentioned Pentax K-50 is certainly a viable choice. At about $550.00 with an 18-55mm zoom lens its the least expensive DSLR that has these features:

1) A true pentaprism which is more expensive to manufacture but provides a much brighter viewfinder that gives 100% coverage. Comparably priced models from Nikon and Canon use the cheaper pentamirror which is dimmer and provides less than 100% coverage.

2) The Pentax K-50 and its 18-55mm zoom are both Weather Resistant. This means they are safe to use in the rain or in very dusty conditions with no fear of damage. No comparably priced Nikon or Canon can make this claim.

It's not exactly an upgrade but if you get from the D5x00 series, you'll see significant additions to the camera. It's not an upgrade since it's basically still entry-level class. Upgrade from the D60 starts at the D7x00 series which is med-level already. A warning though. Whatever camera you decide to get, pictures will remain the same. Shooting on the other hand will get easier however if you know exactly what you are doing with a higher classed camera.

Why not upgrading the lenses instead of entire system. The camera body of D60 is good, you could only upgrade the lens.

If there's nothing wrong with your D60, you don't need an upgrade.
