Tamron A14 AF 18-200 mm lens for Nikon D5100?

I have a Nikon D5100 camera. I'm planning to get a long zoom lens for the same and came across this lens called "Tamron A14 AF 18-200 mm" which looked very good. I want to know if the auto focus function will work in the camera with the said lens.
Heard somewhere that there should be a focussing meter in the camera for the autofocus function to work.
Kindly let me know if the said tamron lens will work well with my camera.

It is focusing MOTOR, not METER. If the lens requires a focusing motor then AF will not work with the D5100. The focusing motor is a small screw which was the way that lenses used to focus back in the film days.

Most newer lenses use AF-S or equivalent motors in the lenses and don't need the body motors to focus, but there are many older designs still on the market. Unfortunately they will not autofocus with any D3xxx or D5xxx body.

The D7xxx series do have body motors because this gives them greater compatibility with older lenses, but your D5100 does not have that option.

If you want to look at independent lenses then I would recommend Sigma over Tamron anyway. Look out for their Nikon mount lenses with HSM, which is their HyperSonicMotor built into the lenses. Sigma lenses with HSM will autofocus with your D5100.

Yes, you can order that lens for a Nikon camera and it will autofocus. It includes an autofocus motor.

How well it works is another story. I have the Tamron 18-270mm PZD lens for my Nikon D90. It does everything I want, but I'm not all that picky. For just walking around and taking pix, that lens will be OK. Like mine, it won't work all that well in dim light, that's what the f/3.5 - 6.3 is telling you. I supplemented my lens with a Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 lens for indoor pix of the family.
