I have a Nikon D5100 camera. I take pictures all of the time, but never use a photo editing software. Can anyone recommend a good photo editing software (free, paid, anything)… I'm using a Macbook Pro.

If you have a lot of money Adobe Photoshop
If you have a low budget maybe Adobe Photoshop Elements 11
If you have no budget Gimp

Hope this helps, keep on snapping some excellent pictures.

There are lots of options… If you have a lot of money then I would get adobe photoshop and lightroom. If you do not have that much money to spend then I would go with nik software or apple apperature. If you are looking for something free then get gimp

If you have to deal with large quantities of photos, you can go for Adobe Lightroom. Along with providing wide-ranging set of basic tools such as tone, contrast, color, noise reduction, highlight/shadow recovery etc, it let you create a decent database. You can view and organize, process, create photo book, make slideshows, print and share your photos and videos.

On the other hand, for advanced editing tools you may get Adobe Photoshop Elements 11.It offers you powerful editing tools to manipulate your photographs, it is easy-to-use, though, you can get tutorials for professional editing features to put on your photos. It allows focal controls and supports stitching and layers while lightroom does not.

Here's a review on Photoshop Elements to give support to your decision:
