Should I upgrade from my Nikon D70?

I love the top lcd screen, bigger size, 1/500 flash sync and long battery life that it delivers. However, it is a very old camera now and my feeling is I would get much better picture quality with something like a D5100. However the D5100 is smaller, lacks the top lcd, and is less suited for my preferences. I don't plan to use live view, and love to use manual settings (manual ISO, aperture priority, and change exposure metering). A big negative with the D70 is only having 5 auto focus points, and only 1 cross type. However I did buy it for $170, so there's that.

What do you think?

Are you successful getting brilliant shots with what you have?

The actual best upgrade would be the Nikon D7100, so I suggest you keep using the D70 to hone your skills and save your pennies until you can make the jump to a real upgrade.

I have a hobbyist friend that still shoots with a D70s and his complaints are he's not satisfied at times with its high ISO performance and the inability to crop as much as he'd like in some instances due to it's lower resolution output. He wants to upgrade, but that's him. Look at your situation and determine carefully if an upgrade would do you any good. If you enjoy manual operation, then auto focus points shouldn't be a huge concern unless you plan to shoot a lot of moving subjects. If you're looking to shoot in situations that require higher ISO often, I'd definitely upgrade.
