Should I pick a SONY dslt over a CANON/NIKON dslr?

People always told me sony's sensor might be better than Nikon n canon but the lense selection for future is only a little.

What should I do? Now i'm choosing between nex 5n, a57 and Nikon d5100

Cannon and nikon have a vast array of lenses. Sont is limited. Their ax series is very nice though. They focus very fast. For the price you pay of a sony you get alot. I personally would chose a cannon 7d but if money is an issue go for a sony. They are great.

How about this you go to a local store and hold the camera, s you shoot a few pictures with them with a SD card you took with you and then at home see how you like it.

Seriously the only person that knows what you need/desire is you.

Now I do own a DSLT but in part that also is because I bought a sony about 5 years ago. So once you buy in a brand. I must say Sony really puts ALLOT of functionality in their cameras that you would have to pay 50% more for with canon or nikon. So they really bring out relative cheap models. And the "there are not enough lenses"

Are you a pro. Do you need a 8mm F4.5 FST whatever lens.indeed. Guess what most used lenses also come out for Sony.

Sony people are going to tell you that you should. Canon people will tell you to pick a Canon. Nikon people will tell you to pick Nikon. And, Pentax people will tell you everything but a Pentax sucks. Truth is, they all make good cameras. Go to a camera store, check out the functionality of the camera as it compares with what you need. See how they feel in your hand. You will make the right choice by doing it this way instead of taking advice of one over the other from a faceless internet poster. I buy most of my equipment on line because it costs so much less, but I would never buy anything without holding it in my hand first.

Here is the deal

Do your own research. Peoples opinions will have nothing to do the practicalities of how YOU will be using the camera you buy.

Fact one: SLT ( NOT dslt) cameras use an electronic viewfinder. If you are planning on shooting sports or any kind of action, the delay between the lens "sees" and your viewfinder sees will be delayed just enough to miss the shot you had carefully framed in the camera

Fact two: Here is a link that will tell you which cameras sensors are actually better than others

After viewing all the camera models that are in your "list", you can better pick the camera with the best sensor performace

Nikon use Sony sensors.

The NEX -5n, like all EVIL cameras is junk, but try the A57 in your hands against the Nikon and see which you like better.

BTW, for the lenses you need, and can afford, Sony are as good as Nikon.

Sony would be my second choice behind Pentax, I wouldn't touch either Nikon or Canon, but that's just me.

In my opinion the Sony SLT A65 would be a better choice than the A57 or the Nikon D5100. Why? Because the A65 has an OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) viewfinder which the A57 doesn't have and because the A65 (as well as the A57) gives you full-time phase-detect auto focus whether you're shooting still pictures or video. The D5100 doesn't allow that.

Here is a review of the A65: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/AA65/AA65A.HTM

The 'Technical Image Press Association' (TIPA) chose the Sony SLT A65 as their 2012 Best DSLR Advanced.

People who tell you Sony has a limited lens selection are wrong. They either don't know or don't want to tell you that all Sony SLT models use a legacy lens mount - the "A" mount - that dates back to the Minolta Maxxum AF 7000 that was introduced in 1985 and launched the era of auto focus 35mm film cameras. So all those previously owned Minolta Maxxum AF lenses can be used on the Sony SLT cameras with full functionality. A Minolta Maxxum AF 70-210mm f4 zoom, known as the "Beercan", can be had for under $200.00 on eBay or B&H or KEH. It will auto focus on the Sony SLT cameras because Sony put a focusing motor in the camera body. With the Nikon D5100 you must use Nikon's more expensive AF-S lenses if you want auto focus.

At B&H - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/...ovideo.com - the Sony SLT A65 with 18-55mm zoom lens is $998.00 which is $200.00 more than the A57. The Nikon D5100, which is being closed out to make room for the replacement D5200, is shown for $596.95 after a $200.00 'Instant Savings' from B&H that ends 10-27-12.

In my opinion the A65 is worth the difference in price over the A57 and the D5100.
