The d90 is a better camera. It has better features; however, it's an older camera. The d5100 is a newer camera, but not as nice. I would get the d90.

They're both nice cameras that excell at different things. Check this website to determine which are most important to you, and choose your camera accordingly.

Personally, I think the D90 is the better camera. It has more functionality for a photographer, with tools such as AWL (wireless lighting) and a autofocus motor (giving full compatibility with AF/AF-D lenses).

The D5100 will be more suited as an entry level video DSLR camera, for those who work with video the D5100 has the swivel screen, and the 1080p video.
