Lens choice for nikon d600?

I was wanting to get the d7000 at first, but the d600 is a full frame camera; while the d7000 is cropped sensor.(not saying thats a problem) but i currently have a cropped sensor camera already, and i'd like to upgrade to a full frame. I've also read that full frame lenses are more expensive.
With that being said, the nikon d600 comes with a 24-85mm vr kit lens. However, i have not seen many good reviews on this lens. Not to mention its a rather expensive $600 lens.
I was wondering if someone could recommend a good lens or two that i could use for this camera. (preferably under $500). Camera will be used for portrait photography indoor & outdoor; and also just every day candid picture taking.

First off, what do you hope to gain by buying a full frame camera? If that has such an impact on the budget for the lenses, you will definitely be better off with a D7000 and twice or thrice the current budget for glass.

Tamron has some popular standard zooms that support full frame cameras, but other than that you won't find any high quality zooms that are worthy of a full frame camera in that budget range. Perhaps Sigma has some offerings too, but Tamron is the more popular choice for standard zooms (whereas Sigma is more popular for ultra wide angle and telephoto lenses).

I'd get a D7000 instead. Especially for candids the extra reach due to the crop factor will be useful.

This review of the 24-85mm zoom seems to contradict what you may have read about it.

The Nikon AF-S 85mm f1.8G for about $500.00 would be an excellent portrait lens on your D600 but lacks the versatility of the 24-85mm zoom.

Since 80% of your camera budget should be in lenses, perhaps a better choice would be the D7000. All too often, people buy an expensive camera and cheap out and buy low quality lenses. This results in not being happy with the money they spent. The lens is as important or even more important than the camera.

But if you want that D600 and a decent lens under $500, buy the 50mm f/1.4. You don't always need a zoom lens, and the prime lens is a better lens anyway.

Yes, FX lenses are deifinitely more expensive. When you break into full frame, you are treading on pro territory. For portrait lens - Nikon 85mm f1.8. The 24-85 vr should be good for an all purpose lens. I have used the old version (non vr) extensively, and have been very happy with image quality. I don't think you'll find a better one unless you want to cross the $1000 barrier. For a telephoto, the 70-300 f4-5.6 vr gets excellent reviews, and is between $500-$600.

How many people use full frame cameras? That's the reason you don't see much reviews about that lens. A good lens for the D600? Get the 50mm f/1.2!
