Is my jessops 300afdn flash gun suitable for the nikon d5000?

Is it made for Nikon? I can't find a 300 anything flash gun on their site, so I can't really tell you!

I'm guessing the 'n' in afdn means it's the Nikon version of the 300AFD. In which case then it will work.

Yes it will work just fine. It's a modern digital flash, so no need to worry about high trigger voltages. As it's made specifically for Nikon cameras, it recognises the TTL (auto flash) signals, so will work in 'auto' mode.
