Good lenses for travel? 50mm?

I have a NIKON D5100. I'm going to New York soon and was just wondering what are you're favourite lenses to take.
I'll be shooting street art and skyline (obviously).
Would you recommend the Nikon 50 mm f 1.8 for street photography?

I currently own the 18-55mm, 50mm f1.8 and the 55-300mm, all by Nikon.

I'm able to purchase new lenses up to $250, so if you have any other lens suggestions from Nikon, tamron or sigma, that would also be fine.

My experience is that for 'walking around photography' (which is what you are likely to be doing on a short visit to NYC), a zoom lens is most convenient.

When I took a film camera, it was always a 35-70mm. With a DSLR, I take an 18-55mm.

For street photography you can have a look at nikkor 35mm f/1.8 dx lens. It would give you a better FOV than your 50mm on your dx camera body. It should be with in your budget as well.

On your 18-55mm just put the lens at 35 mm and take a few test shots to get the feel of what 35mm would deliver.

You don't need any other lenses. You'll probably use the 18-55 the most. I'd walk around with that lens on the camera. Spend the $250 on something you really need like software or hard drives.

You have a good range of lenses to cover what you will see in New York. You will only need the high aperture of the f1.8 lens when light levels are low.

You might like to think about an ultrawide lens, wider than 18mm, say 12mm, but the good ones are outside your budget.
