Does the Nikon D5100 take picture slower in live view v.using the viewfinder?

I just got my camera so I'm still in the process of learning the ins & outs.
I was able to figure out how to use the live view way but when I went to take a picture, after focusing, it was considerably slower in taking a photo (& noisier.)

Is that supposed to happen? Just want to make sure it's not something wrong with my camera.

Yes, that's normal. Using the optical view finder generally is a far superior method of framing a shot.

Dslr cameras are designed and built for serious photography. So, the best way to use such a camera is with the view finder - very fast, very easy.

When using the screen it's slower. If you'll read your manual about "live view" it'll explain why. Or go on line and research camera live view.

The contrast detect autofocus sensors in the live view are slower than the phase detect autofocus sensors in the pentamirror housing of standard mode.

It's normal for Nikon, Canon and Pentax. For 'Live View' or using the LCD instead of the viewfinder means that the camera has to flip the mirror up and out of the way of the image sensor. You lose the fast phase detect auto focus sensors. The camera then relies on the sensor's slow contrast detection.

Sony does not have this problem. They have fast phase auto focus at all times for every current model dSLR type camera.
