I'm very unhappy with my Nikon D90 and want to go back to owning a Canon
which Canon DSLR models should I look into and lenses?

The t4i is the top of the t series line at the moment. Also the 60D wouldn't be a bad choice but you may not find it for your budget. So the t4i.

OK, so here's the bad news. If you go back to Canon, for under 1, 000 Canon has nothing that has a better image sensor than what's found in the Nikon D90.So, you will be wasting your time and money.unhappy is a vague statement. What does that mean? If you have Nikon glass, look at another Nikon before you jump back.

All the current Canon dSLRs whether it be a Canon Rebel, 60D or 7D have image sensors that score at the bottom of the pile. So know that going in. Sony, Pentax and Nikon are using better Sony Exmor sensors.

If it's just about how the camera feels in your hands or the menu system, then know this. Canon uses the same mediocre image sensor in the Rebel, the 60D and the 7D, so spending more won't get you better images or video, so get the cheapest one that gets the job done for you.
