Why would you want to do this? The SD card of your camera is not a good place for long term storage of photos. One should transfer them to a computer and format the SD card (deleting all photos on it in the process) frequently.

You can use a card reader. The edited photos won't show up in the camera though. Normal. Cameras aren't viewing devices. They're dedicated photon capturing devices.

Did it ever cross your mind that the reason you have difficulty is because your camera is trying to tell you something? The camera is for taking photographs and provides a screen to allow a quick check on the iimage quality to give the opportunity to take it again.
The camera was never designed to be a general purpose viewing device - that is why we have ipods, digital photo frames and PCs. The tiny screen on the camera can never do justice to the fantastic image quality produced by your D90

When you change your photos in your PC it is unlikely that the camera will recognise the file.
If you insist on doing then:
1. Use a USB card reader - you won't be able to write direct to the camera.
2. When you edit the file do not rotate the image
3. When you save your edited file retain the EXIF data and don't change the file name
4. Copy the edited files to the same directory on the SD card from where you downloaded them.

You may be able to see them - good luck.

Nikon cameras won't show images which were edited outside of the camera.
