All FX lenses made by or for Nikon will work on the D810. However, that may not be enough to warrant buying the lens. You should take a look at the recommended list of lenses for the D810. Because the D810 has 36MP, you need to buy specific lenses that are of a certain optical quality. Due to the high resolution, you will easily be able to see the imperfections or the lack of sharpness in the lenses that you use.

There are a bunch of lists of the best lenses for the D810. Not surprising, the 24-120 f/3.5-5.6G is not usually (if ever) on these lists, and the 24-120 f/4 is usually near the bottom.

Take a gander at these posts:

Also, go to http://www.photozone.de/...e/nikon_ff and see for yourself just how sharp each lens is or isn't. You'll quickly see that just because the lens isn't made by Nikon, doesn't necessarily mean that it's not superior to the Nikon version. Personally, If I were to be spending $1,000+ on a lens, I'd skip the 24-120 and get a shorter, sharper zoom with an f/2.8 aperture. But that's just me based on my needs.

The older model 24-120mm FX lens is reputed to be not as good as the newer lens. Even the newer 24-120mm is a prosumer lens probably reasonably suited to the D600, but likely to show its deficiencies on the D810. Filling 36 MP with sharp detail across the FX frame when viewed at full magnication requires an investment in more seriously expensive pro lenses with more limited zoom range per each.
