Digital SLR For Pictures and Video & Audio recording?

Guest
Guest

I'm planning to buy a DSLR to take pictures and record video and audio
and mount it to a tripod
(Not to do professionally, but hobby/interest like).

This will be my first DSLR, i've only owned regular digital cameras in the past.
I do have some experience with DSLR's but not a lot (but i'm willing to learn).
I've been looking a lot at the Canon Rebel series, Nikon, and Samsung

I guess these are my perimeters:
- DSLR
- Max $800
- Newbie friendly but still good for more experienced persons (if not possible then, more experienced)
- Comes with a lens? (Unless you guys know how to get a good body and lens for under $800)
- Mountable on a Tripod

Thanks in advance.

Added (1). Update #1: When I said $800, I meant after taxes as well… So I live in Toronto so its 13% so
whatever retail is, its multiplied by 1.13 D

Canon Rebel series is good, usually comes with a two lens kit for $600-700. Of course tripod mountable. Very newbie friendly- lots of automatic and scene selection types, but also various manual modes so you can control everything.

Canon T5i with 18-55mm IS STM kit lens. $749.

For stills Nikon may have a slight advantage, but the Canon T5i is reputed to have the edge in video features.

- DSLR
* Any entry level dSLR will shoot both video and still images. Sound will always be crummy
- Max $800
* The camera with the most bang for the buck at this time is the Nikon D3200, $470. That leaves you with plenty of money to buy an external sound recorder and shotgun microphone so you can produce excellent sound with your video For under $100 you can buy a Zoom H1 and for around $200, you can buy an excellent shotgun microphone.
- Newbie friendly but still good for more experienced persons (if not possible then, more experienced)
* Since all dSLR cameras with a video feature require the same level of competence when shooting video, any camera will do the job. Learning how to write scripts and produce good video will be up to you.,
- Comes with a lens? (Unless you guys know how to get a good body and lens for under $800)
* The entry level cameras come with a 18-55 mm lens, which will be all you need as you start to learn how to use your camera. As you write more scripts you will be able to call for different lenses as your budget allows
- Mountable on a Tripod
* All camera have a standard 1/4-20 tripod mount. What you will need to include is a fluid head.

Okay, now that I have spent all your money I have added some links that you should find helpful as you start shooting video.

Samsung don't do DSLRs (they marketed re-badged Pentax models at one point, but that was a while ago).

Sony's SLTs (A-58, A-77) offer the best video performance, while the Pentax K-500 is the only entry-level model with a 100% pentaprism viewfinder and the ability to meter with manual-focus lenses (Nikon take them, but can't meter, Canon and Sony (Minolta) can't take them).

Your best bet is to find a dealer, handle them, and pick the one that feels best in your hands.

I own and recommend the Canon t3i, an excellent camera for video / audio and still images. It's running
about $600 and a steal at that.

I assume we're talking Canadian dollars and the current rate is 1.00 CAD = 0.917852 USD. So we need to take off another 10%, giving us a budget of around 650 USD, which is OK. We can work with that.

My current list of DSLR's in that range are: Canon T3i - $550, Canon T5/1200D - $500, Pentax K30 $580, Nikon D3200 - $477, Canon SL1/100D - $500, Pentax K-500 - $500 and K-50 - $580, Sony SLT-A58 - $450.

Had to throw out the Nikon D5200 - $700 and D5300 - $850, Sony SLT A57 - $700, and Canon T5i/700D -$750 as being slightly over budget. But maybe you can work them.

After you research them and whittle the list down to 2-4 of them, find a camera store and handle each of them. That's the real way to find out which one is for you.
