No difference. Both make fine lenses. Some Canon lenses are better than their Nikon counterpart, some Nikon lenses are better than their Canon counterpart. Overall both brands have excellent lenses for all purposes.

Canon lenses sometimes are cheaper though, or have IS whereas the Nikon counterpart at the same price does not.

Both are as good as the amount you pay for them. But Nikon has an 18-300mm lens, which is truly an all-in-one lens. Canon only has an 18-200mm, which is still pretty good. Canon has a faster prime lens with the aperture of f1.2, allowing better low light shooting and portraits. Nikon has a lens with the aperture of f1.4.

The best lenses are the ones that fit your camera - anything else is gravy.

If you only know two manufacturers, the question's pretty academic, anyway.
