Can I use a new DSLR lense on an older film camera?

Thanks for taking the time to help me out. I have a number of prime and zoom lenses for my current (cropped sensor) nikon DSLR camera. I'm taking a class in film photography and I have to buy a 35mm film SLR camera. I do want to stick to nikon. Is it possible for me to invest in a body only and use the lenses I already have? Or perhaps buy lenses that will be compatible with both my dslr and SLR? How do I know if they are compatible?

If you have FX lenses, they'll work perfectly on any Nikon AF SLR body, such as the N series. I have an N60, N65, and N2000 and can used current FX lenses. DX lenses will mount and meter, but will vignette as they're designed for a smaller sensor size that's smaller than the 35mm film area.

Older non-autofocus Nikons may require AI coupling or an aperture ring, something that most current Nikon digital lenses don't have.

Here's a chart for your reference.

Yes and no. Depends on the lenses you own. The cropped sensor lenses do not cover the full 35mm film area. So, yes, they will fit on a Nikon film camera such as the D8008 with the same lens mount.
I just put my 18~105 nikkor on my Nikon EL2 and there's a noticeable fall off around the corners.
To work around that, shoot knowing it is happening and plan on cropping the images down for the class.
Nikon has lenses that work on both sizes of sensors so you can buy lenses that do both. When you look at the list of lenses Nikon sells look for the FX lenses. These lenses work on both "full frame" nikons as well as the cropped format DSLR bodies.
Advice, check the list, you may have lenses ready to use on the film camera. Find a good used Nikon that may come with a lens and enjoy the class.
Film is all about the chemistry. The better you are at doing everything to temp and consistency the better your film will come out. Once you have a good negative the printing will be "easy".

The lenses will fit, you can even meter through them but your aperture will be stuck at f22 or whatever the lowest is. You will get a circular image on the frame because the coverage of the lens is smaller. Maybe get some old Nikon fit lenses, you can use them on your DSLR (in manual mode - depends which model)
