Pretty much all of Nikon's lenses can be used on a DSLR. You may loose some of the auto functions, but you can use the lens in a manual mode. There are a few exceptions, so research if in doubt. Ken Rockwell has reviews on a large list of Nikon lenses which may contain useful info. I use an old F-mount catadioptric lens from the late 1970s on my DSLRs. Funky, but it does give me a 500m focal length when I need it.

Virtually all Nikon SLR and SLR lenses ever made will mount on all current Nikon DSLR's. Entry level Nikons such as the D3100, D3200, D5100, D5200, and their predecessors, require AF-S lenses for autofocusing. All AF lenses will mount and meter, but will require manual focusing.

Mid-level and higher Nikons (D7000, D300s, D600, D800, and up) will autofocus with all Nikon mount autofocus lenses, as they have autofocus motors built into their bodies.

Obviously manual focus Nikon film lenses won't autofocus, and, since they don't have the electronic contacts required, also won't meter. You can mount them on mid-level and pro Nikon DSLR's, and they will meter after you've made a setting on the camera (D7000, D300s, D600, D700, D800, and up)

Finally, DX lenses are designed for the smaller DX size sensor and work in a "crippled" format on FX cameras like the Nikon D600, D700, D800, and D3 series. FX lenses work best and provide full-frame capabilities. If you use a DX lens, the Nikon camera automatically switches over and uses the DX size area of the digital sensor.

Here's a fairly comprehensive chart created by Ken Rockwell for your reference.
