I'm looking for a nice DSLR camera that can take high quality photos but is affordable, any suggestions?
Preferably under $400 and either canon or nikon

T3 easy menu, great 12mp pics… I also teach photography, but i would check to see what some of your friends are using… So later you can try out there lenses and see what you like, a few of my photgrapher friends have Nikon, some have Canon… Nikon makes better glass… But… I prefer the true color in canon… So its all up to you

Nikon COOLPIX P510 is the best DSLR camera in your range. You can buy this without any doubt.

Take yourself to a camera shop, try each of them. The one that fits you best is the best one for you.

$450 can get you a Nikon D3100 or Canon Rebel T3.
The Nikon P510 the other poster suggested isn't a D-SLR, it's a bridge camera.

I think you will have to raise your budget with at least another $100. $400 / DSLR / High Qualiy Photos is not really work together. Any DSLR camera would give you high quality photos vs to a point and shoot camera But it's not easy find anything good under $400 which is your budget. I have seen 2 good offers at Amazon.

There was CanonT3 camera with 8-55mm IS II Lens can find found for around $450 and a T3 camera with 18-55mm IS II Lens and Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Telephoto Zoom Lens for $550. Couldn't find anything good for less than that.

You might find a Body only old DSLR for less than $400 (might) but then you will need to buy lenses too right? Which will cost you another $100-$200 at least. So above 2 offers are pretty good I think. Specailly one with 2 lenses if you can get another $150.
