The Canon STM-compatible cameras like the 750D seem to have the advantage over Nikon for autofocusing in video.

They are the same. Want something better? Get a Sony Handycam.

In recent years, both Nikon and Canon have been heavily criticized for lagging far behind Panasonic and Sony in terms of video features and performance. Canon has the edge over Nikon with their STM lenses and the fact that Magic Lantern makes software that adds a lot of extremely useful features specifically for video.

However better on DSLR or mirrorless may be for video, none are as good as a real camcorder. Camcorders take a lot of the headaches out of the process along with having all of the features and capabilities that one needs for video.

The Sony SLT A-58 is better than either, because it allows you to shoot through the viewfinder (Nikon also use Sony sensors).

If video's all you want, though, get a camcorder.

For serious film-making buy a good camcorder.
