Don't: go cheap. Inexpensive, but not cheap. Nothing at the Walmart is worth having.

Do: get the best unit you can afford within your budget.

Any of the "good" stuff will cost more than your budget, although you can get by with a few under that amount.

Bogen/Manfrotto is selling a decent model at the $80 price range, although I don't have the model number handy. It has a pistol grip ballhead, supports about 7 pounds, and appears sturdy.

Another option, for even less, is a Dolica Proline AXB100 or something like that. Very similar to the Bogen 190 series, includes a ballhead, and supports 13 pounds. Price is around $50. I've had one for about 3 years now, and it is still going strong.

Think about how you want to transport it. If it can just go in the car trunk, you can get something more hefty and sturdy for the price. If it has to fit in a backpack, you have to make more compromises on capability. You also need to measure your pack and be certain that the folded length including the head fits within the pack. BHPhoto and Adorama are good sources, partly because they have a big selection and competitive prices, and also because their product descriptions list some very useful specifications.
