Well look at the Fujifilm S series cameras like the S4200 or even the SL series like the SL240 or higher. These look like DSLR cameras, have the features of a point and shoot but have settings for manual and others that allow you some creative control. So a not bad camera with the decent zoom lens. Go to a store and handle one and see as many different models as possible. They seem to provide the best bang for the money with the amount of features and flexibility. There are other cameras out there but few are as loaded in the price range. They are not the ideal camera for low light situations but do take not bad flash shots and produce reasonable quality images that can be printed at 8x10 size (I have several). You can get some low light shots but it takes time and a little effort and playing with the settings (there are a lot of those).it will take time to learn the loads of different capabilities of these cameras.
